Parasite Prevention

Parasite Prevention

Parasites can pose serious threats to your pet’s comfort and health. It’s important that your pet is protected from these pests. Here’s just a short list of common parasites and the issues they cause:

  • Fleas – can trigger dermatitis, tapeworm, and hot spots
  • Intestinal worms – cause illness and can also infect humans
  • Ticks – can transmit numerous dangerous illnesses to both pets and people, including Lyme disease
  • Mosquitoes – carry potentially deadly heart heartworms

Preventative medications go a long way toward safeguarding your pet against the more serious conditions associated with parasites. In addition, you should thoroughly check your pets for fleas and ticks if they’ve been outdoors.

Intestinal worms are usually easy to eliminate with medication. Left untreated, however, they can eventually make your pet very ill. We strongly recommend bringing a stool sample to each of your pet’s regular checkups so your veterinarian can determine if something stronger than over-the-counter medication is needed.

Heartworm infection from mosquitoes is even more threatening because your pet often displays no symptoms until the disease is well advanced. Currently, there is a treatment for dogs, but it can be expensive and very hard on your pet.

At Chimacum Valley Veterinary Hospital, we believe that prevention is always the best treatment! We carry many different types of flea, tick, and heartworm preventive and many of them also prevent some intestinal worms. Our veterinarians can help you choose which one is right for your pet.
